New Market Battlefield Military Museum
The New Market Battlefield Military Museum in historic New Market, Virginia, is a privately owned museum that is the only such facility on a nationally recognized Civil War battlefield. Twenty-five years ago the New Market Battlefield Military Museum was established to fill a huge void in historical Civil War attractions in the Shenandoah Valley. Since that time, the New Market Battlefield Military Museum has provided both the serious student of history and the casual seeker of knowledge with a resource that is unrivaled in its displays and written history.
In July 1990, at a ceremony on the battlefield, 14 granite and marble markers were dedicated to preserve the memory of the men who fought and died on this battlefield. They are the only markers on the New Market battlefield that actually show where the participating units were positioned during the fight.
The New Market Battlefield Military Museum stands between the first Union line of battle and the second Confederate line of battle…
The location of the New Market Battlefield Military Museum puts it squarely in the heat of the fighting that day in May 1864 when Confederates pushed back a concerted Union effort to invade and conquer the Shenandoah Valley.
During the Civil War, the Valley witnessed a great deal of action; today many visitors come to this now peaceful setting looking for information about the war, and the New Market Battlefield Military Museum is the premier answer to their search. The New Market Battlefield Military Museum’s central battlefield location, its stunning displays of original artifacts and its in-depth historical interpretation make the New Market Battlefield Military Museum a resource like no other.
In addition to information on the New Market fight, the New Market Battlefield Military Museum features American history exhibits that follow the trajectory of this nation from prehistoric days to our latest military conflicts. Its section on the American Indian includes arrow/spearheads, war clubs and bead- and quill work. Visitors tell us that our American Indian displays rival those of the museum in Washington, D.C.
Varied and extensive, the New Market Battlefield Military Museum is a not-to-be-missed experience. The founder’s passion for history and truth are evidenced in every aspect of the 130 displays of historically important items.
